24-05-2010

In a show of support for the great outcomes being achieved through the northern dairy industry’s Young Dairy Networks, the Australian Government has announced a continuation of funding for the program for the next financial year.

Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) CEO, Adrian Peake, was delighted by the announcement from the Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, that the QDO has again been selected to receive funding under the next round of the Community Investment Program for the northern dairy industry’s three Young Dairy Networks.

“This additional funding through the Community Investment Program is great news that will allow the good work that has been achieved through the previous program to be enhanced and expanded,” Mr Peake said.

Through the Community Investment Program the QDO will receive $142,475 of new funding for three of the Young Dairy Networks, comprising of $52,275 for the Darling Downs Network and $45,100 each for the South East Queensland and Sunshine Coast Young Dairy Networks.

“This new funding commitment demonstrates a confidence from the Federal Government that the Young Dairy Network project has achieved a range of great outcomes for young dairy farmers and industry stakeholders and that they would like to see this continue and is a vote of confidence in the great work and dedication of the Network coordinators.”

The Young Dairy Network aims to assist young farmers to improve their skills and to provide opportunities for farmers to come together to exchange ideas and experiences and encourage social interaction at an industry level and to meet people with similar interests to build community spirit and networks. The network provides mentoring, friendship and support in times of adversity, a social outlet and leadership training and experience.

The additional funding will support the continuation of network activities including capacity building workshops and skill development.

“This investment in the young dairy network is an investment in the future of our industry and rural and regional communities and we thank the Federal Government for its continuing support of the program,” Mr Peake said.

The Young Dairy Network is a joint initiative of the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation and the Subtropical Dairy Program, and is supported by the NSW Farmers Association, milk companies and the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.
