AWARDS FOR THE CREAM OF DAIRY IN LISMORE REGION
20-11-2009

SubTropical Dairy and Dairy Australia are thrilled to deliver the Cows Create Careers project to the Lismore Region of New South Wales in a move to educate secondary school students about the vocational and university careers pathways in the dairy industry.

“Two heifer calves were last term loaned to the schools so that students could undertake a range of activities which they were assessed upon,” Ms Teese said. “The program encourages students to learn about the dairy industry and the different careers involved in the dairy and related service industries,” she said.

The students who participated in the Cows Create Careers program took part in a range of activities culminating in a presentation day filled with educational activities about the dairy industry and careers in agriculture. The top three schools in each category were presented with awards for their efforts and participation in the program.

A presentation and awards day was held on Friday 6th November 2009 in Lismore where successful schools and students are rewarded for their work and heard about linkages to further educational and career opportunities.

The schools involved in the region were; Richmond River High School, Alstonville High School, Evans River Community School, Kadina High School, Lismore High School, St Johns Catholic College and Mullumbimby High School .

At the presentation and awards day the winning schools were announced. The winning senior school was St Johns Catholic College and the winning junior school was Lismore High School. Each participating school had several teams of two to five students who completed assessment during the term. The “Cow Creators” team from St Johns Catholic College was awarded first place while the “Mighty Moos” team from Lismore High School was awarded first place. Congratulations to all the schools and the teams in the schools who participated.

The Cows Create Careers project would not be possible without the commercial assistance of supplies from Norco, Landmark and Shoof International and the local support of the farmers and milk processing companies. The Australian Dairy Conference have contributed funding to the project for 2009 on a National basis. During 2009, the Cows Create Careers project will be delivered to 160 schools across the nation and will involve over 4,500 students.
